Searching on the origins of my family name I have found some very interesting and sometimes intriguing facts, which
I would like to compile here as a source of history on the Azorean Family VALIM throughout the times. The family name appears in various forms: in Brazil common spellings are Valim, Vallim, Valin or rarely Vallin. In France Vallin, in Sweden, Wallin, and in the US the spellings Valim, Valin, Vallin and even Valine can be found. All of them belong to the same family, of which the most ancient roots are in France, around XI or XII Century.
The Azorean branch began around 1600 when two French brothers, named Vallin,
emmigrated to the Azores archipelago, which is a group of 9 islands discovered by
Portugal in the XV century. On the Azores Islands the spelling was changed to Vallim and
later to VALIM and the use of the French language was forgotten. Today the only remaining spelling of the surname on the Island of Pico is Valim. A curiosity about the
early influence of the French language on the Portuguese language spoken on São Miguel Island is that until
today the pronounciation of the "u" in Portuguese words follows the French usage, as in "tu" (=you) (pronounced as the German umlaut ü).
Many Valim family members live today on the Island of Pico, and no bearer of the
surname Valim appears on the telephone catalogue of the other 8 islands, what I could personally check when I visited São Miguel almost 6 years ago.
So it is to believe that those first immigrants have settled down on the Pico Island. This island is where the highest point of Portugal,
the Pico Mountain, is located.
I have recently bought a book written in 1920 by an Azorean author, who refers to some Valim's living on the Island of São Jorge in the last century and in the beginning of this. For some of the
family members the authors refers that they were from Pico Island. Also recently I got information from a Mexican Vallin, who informed me his ancestors came from Spain, from Asturias Province. More on this piece of information will appear in the near future.
For those interested on the history and facts on the Valim family, please contact in
the meantime my other home page HERE.
There you will find also links to the beautiful Azores Islands, which I visited in 1994 and I am longing to visit again.
